Of the Past and Present celebrates the growth of the gallery since its founding in 1979 and provides a rare opportunity to engage with the breadth of artists in its roster, which today encompasses both significant historic American artists as well as the cutting-edge of contemporary art.
Hollis Taggart is pleased to announce Of the Past and Present: Estates and Contemporary Artists at Hollis Taggart, a group exhibition featuring examples of work by all of the artists and estates represented by the gallery. The gallery’s first floor will showcase work by the ten artists whose estates are represented by the gallery, including Ralph Iwamoto and Brett Taylor, whose estates joined the gallery earlier this year. The second floor of the exhibition will feature an exemplary work by each of the 18 contemporary artists in Hollis Taggart’s roster, including Hayoon Jay Lee and Osamu Kobayashi, who joined the gallery last month, as well as new works by Thomas Agrinier, Dana James, and Rachel MacFarlane. Taken together, Of the Past and Present celebrates the growth of the gallery since its founding in 1979 and provides a rare opportunity to engage with the breadth of artists in its roster, which today encompasses both significant historic American artists as well as the cutting-edge of contemporary art. Of the Past and Present allows visitors to view these in tandem, and to experience the gallery’s deep engagement with both. The exhibition will be on view from June 29 through August 25, with an opening reception on Thursday, June 29, from 5-8PM.
Of the Past and Present marks the eighth anniversary of the gallery’s 521 West 26th Street location, where it opened in 2015 following decades on the Upper East Side. After over forty years promoting the scholarship and display of significant works of American art from the Hudson River School to the American Modernism and Post-War movements, Hollis Taggart formally announced the expansion of its primary market business to include a focus on the presentation of contemporary work in 2019 with the launch of Hollis Taggart Contemporary. In 2022, the gallery further expanded its footprint to include the second floor of 521 West 26th Street. Of the Past and Present also celebrates this recent expansion, which consolidated the modern and contemporary divisions of the gallery and enabled programming that spanned both.
The estates represented by the gallery and artists featured on the first floor of the exhibition are: Leon Berkowitz, Dusti Bonge, Norman Carton, Frances Hines, Sheila Isham, Ralph Iwamoto, Albert Kotin, Knox Martin, Brett Taylor, and Michael (Corinne) West. The contemporary artists in Hollis Taggart’s roster and on view on the second floor are: Thomas Agrinier, Pablo Atchugarry, Audrey Flack, Leah Guadagnoli, Hollis Heichemer, André Hemer, Edward Holland, Dana James, Alex Kanevsky, Tim Kent, John Knuth, Osamu Kobayashi, Chloe Lamb, Hayoon Jay Lee, Rachel MacFarlane, Justine Otto, Bill Scott, and Alexandros Vasmoulakis.
Accompanying the exhibition will be a two-volume, comprehensive catalogue of all of the artists and estates representing by the gallery, including a biography and multiple images of works by each artist. The catalogue is the first publication devoted to providing an overview of Hollis Taggart’s roster.
